I am angry! I am angry that with all of the celebrity sexual assault and rape cases that have recently come to light, there are people that do not believe the women that have come forward. There are others that cannot understand why it would take a woman so long to speak up. Who cares if the assault happened 10…20 years ago? She finally found the courage to come forward.
You know what makes things worse? When people make it a size issue. A popular comedian (who happened to be the main attraction last weekend in my area at a comedy club) tweeted the following:
Now because a woman is plus, no one will believe her? Why would anyone think this is funny? Sexual assault and rape are not laughing matters, and the fact that many paid their money last weekend to see this comedian breaks my heart. Every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, 2016). That’s less than two minutes. Let me repeat…LESS THAN TWO MINUTES.
Instead of asking how could you let this happen, ask how can I support you. Instead of asking why did it take you so long to say something, ask why do men think this is acceptable to violate a woman in such a manner. THIS HAS TO STOP! It doesn’t matter her size, what she was wearing…respect her!
I salute those brave women for coming forward. As we have begun to see, there has been a domino effect. Continue to share your stories, as it will help to educate, criminate, and hopefully in the near future, eradicate.
